City of Sanctuary is an umbrella organisation that links more than 30 towns and cities, across the UK. It aims, in each city, to "build a culture of hospitality for people seeking sanctuary in the UK". Cities of santuary are "proud to be places of safety, and to include people seeking sanctuary fully in the life of their communities".
In October 2014, Reading Refugee Support Group launched Reading's bid to become a City of Sanctuary, along with British Red Cross, Alliance for Cohesion and Racial Equality (ACRE), Reading Voluntary Action (RVA), The Mustard Tree, and Reading International Solidairty Centre (RISC). This steering group hopes to gain the support of other charities, faith groups, community groups, schools, local businesses, and individuals, so that Reading can become a truly welcoming place for anybody seeking sanctuary.
