Since 2012, we have run a homework club, with the help of students from The Abbey School. This gives children from refugee families the opportunity to receive one-to-one support with their school work, increasing their confidence and ability to integrate with their classmates. This project has been very successful, and in 2015 we were successful in getting support from BG Group and set up a new club at Queen Anne's School in Caversham. We are looking to expand it to other schools across Reading.
The next homework club term will run from Tuesday 29th September 2015 to 8th December 2015
English and Life Skills Tuition
For the past three years, we have offered one-to-one English language and life skills lessons to refugees and asylum seekers. We currently have three qualified ESOL (English as a Second Language) volunteer tutors. The clients receive sessions over a period of three months, with the aim of encouraging self-help and self-responsibility. Gaining language and other skills enables our clients to better articulate themselves, and facilitates integration with the wider community of Reading.
We do not employ translators. However, our caseworkers speak a range of languages:
• Kirundi - Rwandee
• Urdu (including dialects, e.g. Punjabi) / Hindi
If another language is required, we use Clear Voice interpreters.
