In 2017, a former client and volunteer at Reading Refugee Support Group decided to establish a football team. Sanctuary Strikers FC is intended to encourage refugees, asylum seekers and others to integrate, in the spirit of hope.
The step to establish a fully registered team to play in the Reading and District Sunday league was ambitious. The cost of establishing the team, including registration fees, insurance premiums, kit and equipment has totalled over £5000. The cost so far has been met with one-off donations from national bodies such as the Football Association “Grow the Game Foundation.” The monthly running costs of £430, for pitch hire, training facilities, referee fees and other minor expenses have been met to date from these same sources - but we now need to raise more money to enable us to cover our costs over the rest of the season.
Some examples of costs include:
Referee fees £34
Pitch hire £35 (reduced rate)
Training facilities £45 (reduced rate)
Footballs £20 each
We ask that you consider supporting this project, in whichever way you can - either financially or just turning up to games to support the team. Please take time to speak to the players afterwards!
All donations will go through Reading Refugee Support Group. We would also be happy to discuss ways in which companies might like to become involved.
